With woodland glades, wildflower meadows and unique outdoor ceremony spaces - this is a really, rather special venue for your wedding. If you are looking for a 'cookie cutter' venue - then look away now! Higher Holcombe is the opposite of what you might expect. Almost accidentally, and because we love all the possibilities that our little patch of Devon offers - our ongoing re-wilding of an old dairy farm means that it's evolving and becoming a rather lovely place to host your special occasion.
The Re-wilding of Higher Holcombe
The idea to create a unique countryside wedding venue came after planting thousands of trees on nearly half the 30 acres. As the saplings grew, we began sowing wildflower flurries in the meadows and made surprising spaces for different parts of your day.
We've planted a hill-top willow 'cathedral' and, hidden in a wooded glade is a secluded silver birch 'church' (which, we have to admit, is the result of a rather wonderful planting accident). It too can be used for an especially memorable outdoor ceremony. We hope you fancy walking up a woodland aisle!
There was a rather ugly old milking parlour which has been beautifully clad with larch - and we believe we can now add 'elegant' to the rustic vibe! We provide hand made chunky trestle tables for your feasts and there are views of the meadow and the fire pit, where you can take the weight off your dancing feet - and stare into the night skies!
We want you to make the most of the fact that you will be surrounded by all your family and friends. If you go for a single day (which will just fly by), you may miss out on the chance to really connect with all your special people.
Make it a Wedding Weekend
With accommodation sorted (glamping for 22 in Lotus Belle tents and space for 10 more in the modern farmhouse), we hope you will be tempted to extend the party and make your wedding a sort of mini-break for everyone who has travelled.
Don't worry! We haven't forgotten the newly-weds! Romantic seclusion is guaranteed for you both in our unique, wooden-clad 'Hobbit House'. With quirky curved walls, woodland views and private facilities - you may be tempted to just cosy up and not go out to make the most of being in the lush Devon countryside!
Make the most of being in this fab part of the world! Not far are the spectacular Jurassic Coast beaches, gentle meandering river walks and there are even views of Dartmoor with its craggy tors (but a bit of a drive away)!
We want your wedding to reflect you both; your personalities, your passions, your priorities. We want your wedding to be all about you. We want you to have a wedding that everyone will love. A wedding where love is celebrated and special memories are made.
There is one main proviso. . .
Have maximum fun.
Oh, and another one. . .
With minimum waste.
Now - that's boho!

Higher Holcombe - Devon Wedding Venue
Environmentally Sustainable Work Practises
Creating (and maintaining)15 acres of woodland is how this all began. Our re-wilding is propped up with our regular wildflower sowings and we encourage couples to forage for greenery to add to their decorations. As well, we have installed an air source heat pump for The Old Dairy's hot water; drilled our own borehole for chemical-free water and use plant-based cleaning products for all but the very toughest of farm jobs. Oh - and we reward our staff who cycle and car share (by paying them more)!
Over Deliver
We love it when you share your wedding plans with us - and we'll back you up to the hilt in practical ways (often with our tractor and trailer) by moving the bar to your preferred spot; sharing our rustic decorative props and old-school games; growing flowers (just in case) in the cutting garden (to jazz up your jam jars); ensuring the fire pit is glowing and cosy and generally ensuring that everything works to plan!
Highly Regarded
Higher Holcombe is actually a very new venue – we opened and hosted our 1st wedding in August 2019. This past year or so has been so tricky with all the uncertainties and changes in guidelines but I have to say that we are really proud of how we have supported couples to make any changes they have wanted. We have been super flexible, made no additional charges and have given every couple exactly what they wanted. We’ve been delighted to receive wine, flowers, kind words and cards from grateful couples and all these appreciative gestures help our world go round!
We honestly could not have hoped for a better wedding day! It was magic from start to finish - the venue was just perfect and Joanna, Gary and Higher Holcombe’s team were so flexible, helpful and were clearly on side and routing for us to have the best day . Our wedding day was earlier this year in August and the weather was looking unreliable - rain/wind weather warnings on your wedding day… not ideal! However we hardly noticed the bad weather because of the double stretch tent and of course the barn. There was also a stash of beautiful umbrellas and I loved that some of the guests even wore wellies to the ceremony! My top tip would be to not be put off by the idea of an outdoor venue and rain. There are enough indoor spaces and the Higher Holcombe team is incredibly creative when it comes to making things work! We had a theme of trees running through the day and what better place to tie the knot than the ‘Silver Birch Church’. The sun even shone through (the rain held off for our ceremony!) and the dappled light was so pretty. Friends made an archway from foraged greenery which was just perfect at the end of the aisle. The majority of our guests stayed on site – many of them where in the gorgeous lotus bell tents. A few lucky families got the shepherds huts which were ideal for their young children. There is also a very conveniently located shower and loo block up in the forest which meant campers needn’t trek down to the main site. It was amazing to have guests arrive and stay on site ahead of and after the wedding day itself – something which not many other venues offer. We also got to stay in the honeymoon suite – the Hobbit House – a cosy hidden away hut with everything you could need. This was such a treat! We were given the freedom at Higher Holcombe to really craft a day which was perfect for us as a couple – we certainly made use of the barn’s kitchen and Joanna’s stash of wedding props! Joanna was there at every step to support us with answers to questions and ideas. We had the absolute best day. 5 stars - thank you Higher Holcombe!
Thank you for helping us have the best wedding!
Everyone is super impressed by your venue and the attitude you have.
Just wanted to say an enormous thank you again for everything you did to make our day so perfect. I'm sure every couple says this, but it really was the best day ever and we are so grateful for everything you did to make it happen!
