Low Waste Weddings: 5 Top Tips on Discovering your Sustainable Wedding Dress

It is a fact, clothing is the third largest planet pollutant, after food and construction, with 208M lbs. of waste generated by single-use outfits in 2019. Yes this is massively influenced by the fast fashion culture, but wedding dresses also have had their part to play in this too.

It also takes around 9000 litres of water to make one wedding dress, not to mention the amount of bleach it takes to get that crystal white colour. So it is refreshing to see that
'Low Waste Weddings' Pinterest search up +235% in 2020, and is becoming clear that there is an awakening amongst us on our wedding planning journey to make more informed decisions on our wedding day plans and how they may impact our environment and the wider world.

We are thrilled to welcome the wonderful Phiney from Poppy Perspective to The Boho Bride Guide Blog this month. She will talk us through all things sustainable wedding dresses, and show us there are other ways to achieve your dream wedding day look, without costing the Earth.

Poppy Perspective creates bridal wear with a classic vintage quality, and a hint of modern cool. They proudly make every dress by hand, and use only a handful of British suppliers and mills. This is not your average bridal boutique.

Your fittings will be at the studio, where the dresses are designed and made. Whether you have a bespoke dress made just for you, or choose from one of their stunning collections. Your journey with Poppy Perspective will be fun, relaxed and enjoyable.

Phiney who is the designer and owner of Poppy Perspective, has shared with us her top tips when choosing a sustainable wedding dress.

So keep reading if you are looking at ways of reducing your impact on our Earth, and want to plan a more eco-friendly wedding. Here are some fabulous tips on choosing your dream wedding dress whilst still being earth conscious.

Tip No. 1 - Shop Vintage or Secondhand

There are so many beautiful clothes already on this planet, by looking for a vintage or re-loved piece you'll be helping the environment as well as having a unique dress with a story behind it. 'Thrifted Wedding Dresses' Pinterest search was +47% from 2019.

Tip No. 2 - Reuse, adapt or incorporate something you already own.

The most sustainable clothes are the ones you already own. Is there something you or a family member already have that you can make into a special dress?

I mean you may even be able to wear your Mum's wedding dress and tweak it to suit your shape and style. Phiney advised that she currently has a few brides who are re-working their mother's dresses at the moment. How unbelievably special!

Tip No. 3 - Borrow or Rent.

When it comes to planning a more sustainable wedding, the purchase of a super expensive wedding dress, that is worn for one day, and then folded away into a box for a generation. Only to resurface at your next house move, is possibly one of the most unsustainable elements of a wedding. So why not consider borrowing or renting your wedding dress?

?Phiney explained to us that she loves that there are a number of bridal rental options nowadays, but you could also borrow a dress from a friend and style it to make it your own. This greatly reduces the demand on the production of new wedding dresses.

Tip No. 4 - Shop with Sustainable Designers.

There are so many amazing bridal designers who focus sustainability in their work. By doing a little research, you can find some gorgeous eco-friendly options, from using fabrics made from recycled plastic to made to order and local production.

Tip No. 5 - Wear your dress again!

Why not wear your wedding dress again or perhaps pass it on? Phiney always encourages brides to have their dress adapted so they can wear it again . It's such a shame to wear what is probably your favourite and most expensive items of clothing only once! However, if you don't plan on wearing it again, I'm sure there will be someone else who would love to wear your dress for their big day!
